Mathematics challenges. Mathematics enthrals. Mathematics connects. We use mathematics to help us explain and understand the connectedness of our world. Many of us need someone to help us make sense of the mathematics that helps make sense of our World!

Fortunately, right here in Victoria, two World class mathematicians have committed themselves to find ways to explain and explore mathematical issues in an accessible and entertaining way.

Drs Burkard Polster and Marty Ross now have a growing reputation as mathematics communicators and they are back to present the MAV's 2008 Public Lecture Series. These lectures appeal to mathematics buffs, families looking for some fun and something to do together, mathematics teachers looking inspiration and to anyone seeking something to stretch a young mind or two.

What is the key to success in mathematics? Cheating! When confronted with an unsolvable problem, mathematicians have simply change the rules, and "solved" the problem according to their new rules. Amazingly, this underhanded technique has proved to be incredibly successful, not just for the sneaky mathematicians, but for mathematics itself. In this talk we'll give a capsule history of mathematics, as two thousand years of such cheating.

Games are not just games anymore. Now that mathematicians are playing, "games" are everywhere, used to analyse anything and everything. This idea of was made famous by the mathematician John Nash (Russell Crowe), propositioning girls in A Beautiful Mind. In the real world, it led to Nash's Nobel Prize for Economics. Beyond this, game theory has been applied to biology, to politics and war, and to much, much more. In our talk will describe how mathematicians think about games. We'll show how game theory can provide insight whenever there is the possibility of conflict or competition, or even of cooperation.

About the Lecturers:

Burkard and Marty are Melbourne's tag team of mathematics. They do official research on abstract geometry, but their real goal is to have fun with mathematics and to convince others to do so as well. In addition to the public lectures on mathematics at Melbourne Museum, they have also appeared on TV discussing such burning issues as how to balance wobbly tables, and how to lace your shoes.

burkard polsterBurkard Polster is a maths lecturer, and Monash University's resident Mathemagician, mathematical juggler, origami expert, bubble-master, shoelace charmer, and Count von Count impersonator. When he is not doing fun mathematics he has fun investigating perfect mathematical universes.

Marty Ross

 

Marty Ross is a mathematical bum. At the age of 2, he ran away from America to join the circus. After some controversy involving an elephant, he returned to America to do his PhD on minimal surfaces at Stanford University. After a stint at Rice University, he came back to Australia. Since then, he has wandered from Maths Department to Maths Department, aimless but happy.
