Literacy and Numeracy Strategy Launched

Date: 5 July 2017

The Mathematical Association of Victoria welcomes the State Government's renewed focus on numeracy and the ambitious - yet very important - targets that have been set to lift student achievement in mathematics.

The DET launched the new Literacy and Numeracy Strategy (v1) in June 2017. The Department has introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy to support the work teachers do in the classroom, and at school, to improve literacy and numeracy. The strategy was devised in collaboration with literacy and numeracy experts, principals, teachers, academics, key stakeholders and peak bodies.

Across Victoria, are examples of teachers and schools that are making impressive headway towards achieving these targets already. MAV is proud to be working with many metropolitan and regional schools who are doing impressive things to support student achievement, and teacher development in mathematics education. As part of our growing Maths Active Schools program there are now 25 accredited schools demonstrating excellence in many areas including teacher development, student and community engagement. These schools must have a whole school mathematics plan, and meet rigorous criteria, showing evidence based improvement over time. MAV works with these schools to help them achieve.

MAV is committed to supporting the needs of all Victorian teachers in mathematics and working to support the implementation of the strategy in its activities.
