2019 AAMT Biennial conference

AAMT Conference Why Maths

AAMT Biennial Conference in Brisbane

The 2019 AAMT Biennial conference (July 9-11) has the theme of Why Maths? Inspiration beyond the classroom.

This theme is very topical in mathematics education. In all levels of education from the early years to senior secondary, mathematics teachers are continually looking for ideas to demonstrate the practical and workplace applications of mathematics to stimulate the interest of their students. Teachers want to inspire their students with the career opportunities that arise from good mathematical skills. The conference will give teachers the opportunity to present their creative ideas on how to captivate their students, for example with rich tasks, problem-solving, modelling, mathematics in STEM, and practical mathematics activities.

For secondary mathematics classes, it is important for teachers to have a good understanding of the work of mathematics practitioners in industry, business, research and the public sector. The economies of the future will depend on young people with strong skills in quantitative methods, data handling, problem solving, modelling and so on. We are inviting mathematics practitioners from industry, business and research to talk about their work. We aim to use these interactions to generate new ideas for teaching mathematics.

For more information, including submitting registrations and presentations, see the conference website: www.aamt.edu.au/whymaths

Offers to present are due by 4 March 2019.
