to be held at Melbourne Graduate School of Education, 234 Queensberry Street, The University of Melbourne.

Jen Bowden and Ellen Corovic, leading Primary Mathematics Consultants at the MAV are presenting on both days.

Jen Bowden is an Education Consultant for the Mathematical Association of Victoria. She works with teachers to build teacher capacity, increase knowledge of curriculum content, develop pedagogies and establish school-wide improvement plans. She takes a variety of approaches whilst working with teachers, including modelled teaching, coaching, intensive curriculum planning, afterschool workshops and whole school professional development days.

Whether it be exploring engaging picture books or investigating big picture thinking, her approach is always engaging, hands-on and guaranteed to challenge teachers’ thinking.

Day 1:  Friday 23 June, 2017

  For mathematics education leaders

Presented by Ellen Corovic:

Making Mathematical Connections

This workshop will focus on how ‘Big Ideas’ thinking connects to mathematics, curriculum and practice; from a global level down to individual school perspectives. Time will be spent unpacking what the Big Ideas are from a top down and bottom up approach and the implications this perspective has on schools, teachers and our students.

Presented by Jen Bowden, with Jen Briggs of Derrimut Primary School:

Collaborative Maths Leadership

This workshop will inquire into the challenges that early leaders are faced with when stepping into their new role. The session will explore ways of introducing whole school approaches to mathematics learning, building an agreed and viable curriculum, and developing teacher capacity and pedagogical content knowledge. Opportunities to discuss and problem solve personal experiences and challenges will be incorporated within the session.

Day 2:  Saturday 24 June, 2017

  For primary school teachers

Jen and Ellen present the keynote:

Being A Professional Maths Teacher – pedagogy, planning and practice

What does it mean to be a professional maths teacher? How can we juggle pedagogy, planning and practice? This keynote will explore successful strategies for balancing the roles of our profession. Jen and Ellen will share their experiences as teachers, leaders and consultants in the diverse range of schools and education settings they work in. How can you be a proficient ring master in the circus that is a school?

Success in tertiary education requires Maths!

The perfect storm!

  • Universities, Tafes and RTOs are competing for students and the maths required in the courses is not clear, nor is maths listed as a pre-requisite. Many students then believe, or are told, they don’t need maths to do Business, Science etc.
  • But when students get into the course they find there is actually significant maths involved in the course and many students are actually failing….and realising that they should have continued with maths in year 11 & 12.
  • Some students pass if they repeat the unit, but that comes at a great cost because usually they have to pay for repeating the subject and it may delay their studies by one year.
  • Many students drop out of the course, simply because they can't cope with the maths components and don’t have the confidence to seek the assistance provided.

Find out more about the maths included in various courses including trades by downloading this important presentation.

Why we love this book: A practical guide to success for all students.
It’s not about which approach you use, but how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school. To make this possible, this book provides a practical framework to choose the right approach at the right time, depending upon where learners are within three phases of learning. The framework is forged out of current research in mathematics combined with John Hattie’s synthesis of more than 15 years of education research. Chapter by chapter, and equipped with video clips, planning tools, rubrics, and templates, you get the inside track on which instructional strategies to use at each phase of the learning cycle.
