MATRIX RHS panelDear Mathematics Educators,

Welcome to MATRIX!

You may have noticed that we have changed the name of our MAV’s newsletter from ‘MAVlist’ to ‘Matrix’. The new name aligns the various publications of MAV using names that are memorable and maths-based. The purpose of the newsletter has not changed, and we will continue to bring you the latest news, special offers, professional reading ideas, events and more.

We understand that the newsletter is loved by mathematics educators as it provides a range of ideas and links that allow you to explore the world of mathematics and teaching and learning. Different people like different elements of the format, so we will continue to keep the inclusions interesting and varied.

We hope you find something great in this edition.

Our Professional Learning is ramping up, with VCE in full swing. Don’t forget to register, especially for those upcoming regional VCE events just launched. See below.

EasyRead TwinTime Teacher Card

EasyRead TwinTime Teacher Card

This resource can be used to demonstrate every element of the curriculum relating to analogue clocks, including writing the displayed time on the write-on-wipe-off surface.

The design of the faces makes every element easy to explain, it even shows how the hour number changes at half past when we’re teaching ‘Minutes Past and To the Hour’.

It also allows for instant comparison between ‘12/24 Hour’ times and ‘Minutes Past and To’; very useful when you reach that part of the curriculum.

concept based mathematics

Concept Based Mathematics: Teaching for Deep Understanding in Secondary Classrooms

Give math students the connections between what they learn and how they do math - and suddenly math makes sense.

If your secondary-school students are fearful of math, it’s time for a new approach. When you teach concepts rather than rote processes, you show students math’s essential elegance, as well as its practicality - and help them discover their own natural mathematical abilities.
