The Master of Teaching (Primary) is for graduates who want to become primary school teachers and have an appropriate undergraduate degree.

It’s a pre-service teacher education program that applies advanced knowledge and research findings to the problems, issues and challenges facing education professionals.

Graduates will be eligible for employment in Catholic and other faith-based schools, and government and non-government schools. 

This Masters degree prepares primary school teachers who are reflective, independent and flexible thinkers who can apply their skills to improve curriculum offerings and advance their community’s education.

It gives students valuable professional experience through a range of school- and community-based placements during the course.

Master of Teaching (Secondary) - 2-year postgraduate program approved for secondary teaching in Victoria.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is for graduates who want to become secondary school teachers and have an appropriate undergraduate degree. Graduates will be eligible for employment in Catholic and other faith-based schools, independent and government high schools and other secondary schools.

Depending on your undergraduate degree, this Master’s degree will prepare you to teach specialist areas including:

  • visual arts, music and/or drama
  • English
  • mathematics
  • commerce and business
  • studies of society and the environment
  • languages other than English
  • personal development, health and physical education
  • information and communication technology
  • liberal arts and sciences
  • religious education

It enables students to adopt a research-based approach to reflective practice. They’ll be able to consider the implications and applications of this approach to their own professional development and its contribution to their students’ learning and wellbeing.

The course provides valuable professional experience through a variety of school and community-based placements during the course.

Students who undertake the Master of Teaching (Secondary) may also concurrently complete the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education to gain accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic schools.

The second year of the Master of Teaching (Secondary)(Professional Practice) will be undertaken through partnership between ACU and secondary schools. Participants will undertake a paid 0.8 teaching load in a secondary school and complete a project focusing on teaching as evidence-based practice (0.2 load).

Each participant in the program will work with a dedicated teacher mentor and university teaching scholar to develop capabilities in three key areas:

  • aligning curriculum, teaching and assessment
  • explicitly connecting national priorities of literacy and numeracy with discipline studies
  • collecting, interpreting and using assessment evidence and school data to improve learning outcomes and for educational accountability

Entry conditions apply. Subject also to school/employer authority offer of employment at 0.8 load.

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY

Master of Applied Learning and Teaching - 2-year graduate-entry program approved for secondary teaching. These courses can be done on campus or off campus.

The Master of Applied Learning and Teaching qualifies students to work in secondary schools and other youth settings such as VCAL, Vocational Education & Training System (TAFE).

The course will personalise participants’ learning experiences by adopting a problem-based approach that is closely aligned with authentic school improvement initiatives, and linking theory and practice through strong work-integrated learning partnerships with Primary and Secondary schools across Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool forming what is called the Deakin Academies. Participants will be asked to engage critically with their developing expertise in teaching practice and be open to contemporary ideas and research challenging traditional transmissive approaches to teaching and responding to a need for greater cultural diversity and inclusivity in patterns of Australian educational participation.

Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) - 2 years full-time or part-time equivalent# This course can be done on campus or off campus.

Early Childhood Education focuses on birth to 5 years. As Australia is amid significant growth in the early childhood education sector, Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) has been developed to address the potential shortage of trained early childhood teachers.

Master of Teaching (Primary and Early Childhood) - Full-time study:1.5 years for students undertaking studies in Trimester 1, 2, 3, and 1 in the following year, or 2 years for students undertaking studies in Trimesters 1,2 and 1,2 combination.

The Master of Teaching (Primary/Early Childhood) is course fully accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) for both early childhood and primary teacher registration. This course prepares graduates for employment as primary and early childhood teachers in Australian and overseas. 

Selecting this course offers you more flexibility in the settings you will be qualified to teach in when you graduate. You will study units relevant to early childhood and primary education including: curriculum, math, science, the arts, English/literacy, language, humanities, health and physical education and play pedagogy.

You'll gain teaching skills across physical education, technology, science, humanities, literacy and numeracy. Your subjects will also cover contemporary teaching methods, curriculum theory, lesson planning and classroom management, all of which will influence your thinking when you start working in the classroom.

Your subjects will be taught through a blend of online distance learning and 15 days of face-to-face classes, delivered in three five-day blocks at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus. To build practical teaching experience, you'll undertake 60 days of supervised teaching practice and complete a practitioner research project.

You have the option to complete this degree through an accelerated 18-month path, or extended over 30 months. As well as a teaching career, this degree also opens the option to go on to further research in education.

MONASH UNIVERSITY

Master of Teaching Practise (Primary Education)- 2-year graduate program approved for primary teaching in Victoria.#

The program has been designed for you to develop and enhance professional teaching and research skills and develop sound knowledge of theoretical approaches and issues in Primary Education. This program will also enable you to teach in national and international contexts, subject to local registration requirements. In the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship you get paid to teach in a secondary school while completing your teaching degree.

Following a rigorous selection process, we'll match applicants who have the right mix of outstanding academic results, experience and aptitude to teaching internships in secondary schools around Victoria.

After an initial on-campus program, you'll commence teaching in your school of employment on a starting salary. You will be provided with an exceptionally strong support network of supervisors, mentors and coaches to help you transition into leading a classroom. By undertaking your academic studies alongside teaching, you can continuously apply what you are learning.

This program is a stream of our acclaimed Master of Teaching which has been shown to better prepare beginning teachers using the clinical teaching model.

Gain practical experience and prepare for a rewarding career as a primary school teacher. Refine your craft as a teacher by engaging in classroom discussions and undertaking research.

This new course will be offered for the first time in 2017, pending final accreditation with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. You will also gain significant workplace experience through 60 days of supervised teaching practice in different primary schools.

These experiences occur over the course of both years with teaching blocks in each semester.

An additional 10-day teaching experience is also available for preservice teachers who undertake Primary Specialisation units to extend the depth of knowledge in a selected specialist domain - numeracy, literacy or science. 

This course structure is guided by the integration of three groups of practices:

  • Epistemologies of practice: Experiences and processes of learning through social acts 
  • Pedagogies of practice: Learning environments that enable inquiry and action
  • Methodologies of practice: Investigations of meaning and understanding that unites mind, material and process.

This new course will be offered for the first time in 2017, pending final accreditation with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. The course involves significant learning in the workplace - you will complete supervised teaching practice of 60 days in a secondary school over the two years of the course.

You can complete the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) over 24 months or 18 months as a full time enrolled student. It is possible to complete the course in 18 months if you complete some units of study and teaching placement in summer and winter semesters. Unit of study offerings in summer and winter are subject to demand and availability of school placements.
