Master Classes in Mathematics
This superbly presented book celebrates the centenary of the MAV, which first saw light as the Melbourne Mathematical Society in 1906.
This book consists of nine lectures and presentations given to the MAV fifty years ago by some outstanding figures in Victoria at the time. Three were professors at The University of Melbourne. The authors also include the founding director of the Australian Council of Educational Research, a future director of secondary education, and a practising teacher.
Several chapters report on what were, at the time, comparatively new applications of mathematics; in particular, the use of statistical methods in industry and mathematical modelling. Other chapters raise fundamental questions about the complex relationship between mathematics, the academic discipline, and what is taught in schools. Many of the questions raised then are just as relevant today.
Master Classes in Mathematics shows how the MAV's current goal of Valuing Mathematics in Society was viewed as fundamentally important fifty years ago. Then and now mathematics underpins our broader social and intellectual life, and provides a foundation for Australia's scientific advancement and its continued economic prosperity.
