Assembled by Dubravka Maksimovic, of Sunbury SC, December 2008
Many students enjoy and benefit from practising mathematical skills using a computer. ICT can also be utilised to help students to understand mathematical ideas, although files that enable this are more rare.
For schools using some Victorian textbooks and their associated CDs, this database has been created. These provide links to those CDs and not to the internet. You will probably need to modify the links provided so that they reach the correct files on your school’s intranet.
At this stage only some CDs have been accessed. Others will be added over time. No preference for any commercial product is expressed in this collection.
There are a vast number of interactive files available free over the internet. These are available in the file: Internet Database for Interactive Maths. We ask every teacher who finds any ways to improve the database to contact MAV with their suggestions.
Both databases comprise mathematical tasks originally assembled for Years 9 and 10. They cover all dimensions of the present VELS syllabus, some better than others. Within those dimensions Ian Lowe, professional officer at MAV, has nominated the topics.
Within each topic Ms Maksimovic has graded the student learning activities available into three levels, where level 1 is the easiest. She has provided instructions to students about what to do.
Her experience has led to a general method of assessing students’ work. Each student has their own intranet location, and on that they save a word document for each topic. Into this document they paste the outcomes of their work. She can then access this and assess it.
The general instruction provided for each topic is:
Use “Print Scrn” key to copy and “Cntrl V” to paste your results in the blank word document at your Maths folder named with [Your name]_[Topic Name]
