(P) Coding – A Hackathon for Beginners

Date: Tuesday 7 March 2017        
Time: 4:15pm to 6:30pm
Venue: Mathematical Association of Victoria, 61 Blyth Street, Brunswick
Presenter: Ben Buckton, Invent the World.

In this workshop, experts from Invent The World, will share a variety of websites and resources to assist teachers to create a coding program for their students. Teachers will be challenged as they complete their own coding, problem solving challenge.

(P) Using picture books to inspire a working mathematical approach

Date: Tuesday 21 March 2017

Presenter: Jennifer Bowden and Ellen Corovic – MAV education consultants

Participants in this professional leaning session will explore a range of stories to engage primary learners. A fabulous collection of picture story books with ideas on how to develop mathematically rich and differentiated lessons will be the focus. In addition, the power of developing 'story shells' as an additional tool to hook students in will be examined.

This popular program will continue in terms 1 and 2. It is for teacher who would like inexpensive workshops led by Ian Lowe to help them with engaging activities to help students (and themselves if needed) to understand years 7 to 10 maths.

(P&S) Numeracy Rescue: Differentiation in Number for teachers of Year 5 to 10

Date: Thursday 2 March 2017        
Time: 4:00pm to 5:30pm
Venue: Mathematical Association of Victoria, 61 Blyth Street, Brunswick
Presenter: Ian Lowe

Dealing with the need to differentiate learning in the area of Number (particularly Whole numbers and Fractions) is becoming a common challenge for teachers in upper primary and lower secondary.  Ian Lowe's Numeracy Rescue program will provide the basis for this workshop and will include ideas, hands-on activities, games and spreadsheets to assist teachers.

(P&S) Making Connections: Big Ideas in Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Date: Tuesday 28 March 2017
Time: 9:00am to 1:00pm

Presenters: Dave Tout, Senior Research Fellow, Numeracy & Mathematics, Vocational, Adult and Workplace Education Services. ACER
Jim Spithill, Research Fellow – Test Developer, ACER and President of MAV

This workshop will focus on how “Big Ideas” thinking connects to mathematics, curriculum and practice; from a global level down to individual school perspectives. Time will be spent unpacking what the Big Ideas are from a top down and bottom up approach and the implications this perspective has on schools, teachers and our students. Suitable for year F-12.

(VCE) Meet the Assessors Evenings 5:00PM – 7:00PM

During these workshops assessors will discuss the processes for setting and marking the 2016 examinations. The presenters will provide a full analysis of the 2016 examinations highlighting student responses and key misunderstandings.

(VCE) SAC Evening Workshops 5:00PM – 7:00PM

 mtq(MTQ) FREE MTQ workshops in Victoria

With organisation of the 2017 Maths Talent Quest currently underway, The Mathematical Association of Victoria will be running three professional development workshops for Victoria. These workshops will provide teachers with valuable Maths Talent Quest Information, allowing teachers to gain a further understanding of the Maths Talent Quest and the process involved.

The Maths Talent Quest marking rubric and judging process will be thoroughly explained, with examples of past entries presented. As this is a FREE workshop, places are extremely limited so please don’t miss out!

(Hobart) Workshops in Hobart!

The Mathematical Association of Victoria in partnership with AAMT will again run two PD workshops in Hobart.  

Workshop 1: Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) Workshop

Date: Tuesday 21 February 2017
Time: 4:00pm-5:00pm
Venue: Ogilvie High School, 228 New Town Road, New Town

This workshop is to assist teachers interested in entering work into The Maths Talent Quest. MTQ is a wonderful opportunity to allow students to complete a mathematical investigation around a topic that intrigues them. The MTQ has many supporting resources including a guiding rubric to assist teachers to facilitate the investigative process. Students from Tasmania in Years Foundation to 12 are invited to enter the Victorian Maths Talent Quest.

This workshop is FREE and available to the first 25 people.

Workshop 2: Let’s Get Started! Engaging dice and card games to motivate students (YEARS F-6)

Date: Wednesday 22nd February
Time: 3:30pm-5:00pm
Venue: Princes Street Primary School, Randall Street, Sandy Bay
Cost: Members: $50 MAV or MAT members     Non-Members: $62.50

This workshop is limited to the first 25 and teachers will be elbow deep in dice and cards during this workshop. The session will focus on developing mathematical fluency and reasoning in students through the use of hands-on and engaging card and dice games. Teachers will be armed with a range of activities and we will explore how to easily differentiate them ready for a range of student learning needs.
