Dear Maths Educators,
I am pleased to bring some very exciting news to Primary mathematics educators!
The MAV and the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, Mathematics Education Group, have combined forces to deliver an inaugural two-day primary mathematics education conference. Day 1 is for mathematics education leaders, and day 2 is for all primary mathematics teachers. This event promises to one of the most exciting new events in your professional learning calendar, and is an opportunity to learn from leaders from both organisations. A PDF flier is attached, and you can also access the conference web-page by clicking here. More information is in the newsletter below.
We also have a host of professional learning events going on over Term 2 and 3 including some new and highly engaging sessions, make sure you check out what is on.
Don’t forget the AGM will be held on Tuesday 16th May, 2017 at the National Sports Museum at the MCG. Arrive at 5.45pm for a presentation on the National Sports Museum and the MAV Made by Maths app, followed by the AGM. Join us for drinks and finger food after the AGM, and take some time to explore the maths of the Sports Museum using the Made by Maths app. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.

We recently sent out our Professional Learning newsletter for Term 2.
For Year 7 to 10 years teachers we are especially looking forward to the session "Hand's-on Algebra", looking at real life algebra in order to make this topic more accessible for students who often struggle with the "abstractness" of Algebra.

The MAV Journals. How can I help?
Our journal editors are always on the look out for mathematically interesting photographs. Perhaps you've been somewhere and seen something that lends itself to mathematics? A sunflower showing the Fibbonacci sequence, a lego construction showing symmetry, a mathematically interesting building or sculpture - if you see it, snap it! Images need to be high resolution. Normally a smartphone is fine, just be sure that you don't compress the image when you send it to us.
Share your best ideas
Writing articles for publication in MAV's journals is a great way to extend your professional learning. We are keen to receive submissions from early years teachers all the way through to VCE and VCAL. You may have planned a great lesson, overcome some misconceptions, tried a new way of doing something, had a success or a failure - we want to hear about it.
Submissions do not need to be word perfect, our editors will assist in getting the article ready for print.
Ron Smith tribute
Long time member of the MAV, Ron Smith passed away in 2015. The MAV are working on a tribute to Ron Smith which we hope to publish later this year.
We are keen to get submissions from Ron’s colleagues, friends and anyone who has been impacted by his contribution to mathematics education.
If you are interested in contributing, please email Darinka Rob, firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject ‘Ron Smith tribute’ in the subject line.
Dan Finkel comes to Australia
Dan Finkel is a confirmed key note at MAV17, and Dan is also running further workshops while in Australia!
Can mathematics encourage students to become more creative, courageous and innovative? A different approach to mathematics in the classroom, using playful maths experiences and rich tasks, can inspire students to become problem solvers, question posers and genuine mathematical thinkers. Dan Finkel is Founder of the Seattle-based organisation, Math for Love, and a 2015 TedX speaker. This December
Dan is coming to Australia to work with schools, lead teacher workshops and give talks on mathematics and education. Click here for more information on how you can be involved.

Authentic, real life math scenarios are ready for you!
Join schools in Victoria who are using Machinam’s In Real Life resources in their year 9 maths classes in 2017. This digital resource is ready and we couldn’t be more excited!
What is it?
Engaging. Digital. Scenario-based delivery. Mathematics resources that are relevant to student’s interests and future careers. Covering all aspects of the Australian Curriculum for mathematics, In Real Life allows students to solve authentic, real world problems about topics they can relate to.
How does it work?
Students log in, solve their own quests and learn why they need maths in the real world. Teachers get engaged students, immediate feedback, ability to customise lessons and create student learning pathways.

NAPLAN Preparation 2017 with Education Perfect
Education Perfect is offering complimentary access to automatically marked revision material in the lead up to NAPLAN.
These involve a number of NAPLAN-style tests for numeracy, language conventions, reading and writing that are automatically marked and linked to recommendations. These analyse and target students' strengths and weaknesses, and from this, recommend lessons that aim to fill those gaps.
This analysis provides an individual learning pathway for each student. These lessons can be used to help students learn at their own pace to prepare for NAPLAN.
Visit www.educationperfect.com to find out more.
